For «Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men»: precisely on Golgotha «humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross» (cf. Phil. 2:5-8). At the foot of the Cross Mary shares through faith in the shocking mystery of this self- emptying. This is perhaps the deepest «kenosis» of faith in human history (JOHN PAUL II, Encyclical Redemptoris Mater, n. 18).

En efecto, «Cristo, . .. siendo de condición divina, no retuvo ávidamente el ser igual a Dios. Sino que se despojó de sí mismo, tomando la condición de siervo, haciéndose semejante a los hombres»; concretamente en el Gólgota «se humilló a sí mismo, obedeciendo hasta la muerte y muerte de cruz» (cf. Flp 2, 5-8). A los pies de la Cruz María participa por medio de la fe en el desconcertante misterio de este despojamiento. Es ésta tal vez la más profunda «kénosis» de la fe en la historia de la humanidad (JUAN PABLO II, Encíclica Redemptoris Mater, n. 18)
